Training Workshop on The Concept and Measurement of Efficiency in Health Care

OVERVIEW

With the increasing healthcare sector cost and  accounting for a considerable proportion of national expenditures, the pursuit of efficiency has become a primary objective of policymakers within most health systems.

However, the analysis and measurement of efficiency is a complex undertaking, not least due to the multiple objectives of health care organizations and the many gaps in information systems.

This training workshop will provide an introduction to the overall concepts of           efficiency and use of techniques for measuring efficiency in healthcare.  Moreover, the participants will have the chance to know  how these two measurement tools on efficiency namely Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) are applied in health care

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the workshop the participants are expected to:

  • Understand the concept of productivity and efficiency  in health  care
  • Gain understanding on the economic theories underpinning  efficiency measurement techniques
  • Be able to apply the knowledge learned on the application of efficiency measurement in health care studies
  • Understand how casemix promotes efficiency
  • Know the results of studies on efficiency measurement in teaching hospitals in Malaysia
